In a selfie-filled world, we borrow the concept to create a single colour linocut self-portrait, or portrait of a family member or friend.

This is a perfect beginner or intermediate course to inspire you to take your linocutting to the next level or to address memories of rock-hard lino and not-so-sharp tools at school.

Ann will take you step by step from your initial sketch or photograph, using her own work to explain and demonstrate at every stage. You'll learn how to 'reduce' your sketch or photograph into a simple, yet effective single colour image. Then, how to transfer your drawing to lino before learning methods of safe use of the linocutting tools.

The second part of the day will be spent cutting the block, then proofing your image before printing a small number of original prints from your block.

If time allows, there will be an opportunity towards the end of the day to experiment with adding colour(s) to your single colour image using tissue paper and a process called 'chine colle'. If time runs short, Ann will describe and demonstrate this process on her own work, so that this aspect is covered.

Please bring a 'selfie' (strong black and white sketch or high contrast black & white photograph) with you to work from. We will be working on a 10cm by x 10cm piece of lino, therefore please ensure your image is no larger than this. The head/neck should take up most of the 10cm square without too much background, so that we can focus on the hair, face and features.
